Reformers challenge the status quo within state-owned media outlets
March 14, 2011
As the street protests of Egypt’s January 25th Revolution succeeded in ending the country’s authoritarian rule, they also triggered a wave of protests inside state-run media institutions. Journalists working for state media were inspired to forcefully present demands not only about their working conditions but also calling for a restructuring of the institutions’ mission and working procedures. In the past, journalists periodically held protests over working conditions but without questioning the status quo of the respective institutions. Now journalists are reflecting the country’s transitional period with its yearning for democracy and freedom, and are advocating higher-level issues such as free circulation of information and an end to newspaper licensing that were previously raised only by human rights organizations and individual writers. Even before the success was certain for the democracy movement in the street, reformers within state-owned media demanded an end to the pro-regime slant in coverage. Although the top management in state institutions did not initially sympathize with calls for overhauling state media institutions, nevertheless dramatic changes were being suggested at high levels, such as the head of the ERTU news sector proposing that the state broadcasting group could be insulated from governmental interference like the BBC, and the Press Syndicate’s head of training calling for the abolishment of the newspaper-licensing Supreme Press Council.

How to hold on to readers
June 17, 2009
Let’s admit it: Most readers don’t really love newspapers. They are fickle, fussy and hurried — they want the news, but they want to be “done” with reading as soon as possible to move on to work, play or rest. Dan Barry, author of The New York Times’ “This Land” and “About New York” columns and a former city reporter, tells his journalism students that “readers are looking for a reason to bail.” A long and boring story, an obvious photo or a complicated graphic and they’re out. What do we do to keep them?
